Description

The Department of Biostatistics develops quantitative methodologies and tools for rigorous scientific research to solve the world’s most challenging problems in biology, medicine and public health. Our view of biostatistics encompasses all aspects of the scientific method, from study design and data collection to computation, statistical analysis and interpretation of findings. Department faculty are leaders in the development and application of statistical methods in genetics/genomics and bioinformatics, epidemiology, causal inference, clinical trials, spatial/spatiotemporal data, high-dimensional analysis, biomedical imaging and statistical computation.

The department offers three degree programs:

  • The MPH degree emphasizes application of biostatistics and provides training for a career in public health. Students apply to this program through SOPHAS.
  • The MS degree emphasizes the theoretical mastery of biostatistical skills. It is designed to train professional statisticians to work in the technology industry, biomedical research, the pharmaceutical industry, and healthcare organizations. Students apply to the MS program through the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • The PhD degree provides advanced training in statistical modeling, inference, and computation in order to meet the challenges of modern biomedical science. Students apply to the PhD program through the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
