Description

To better understand and improve life, students in the master’s degree program at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI learn to analyze biological data and apply those analyses to pioneering research and industry challenges. You’ll use computational tools and develop applications that bridge the gap between data and discovery—in areas such as natural water resources research and genome biology.

Students are expected to have an introductory background in computing or biology. Our faculty will help you select courses that build on your background and elevate your skills—integrating informatics, computer science, information systems, math, biology, and related areas.

Full-time or part-time studies

Full-time students can complete the 36-credit-hour program in two years. Part-time study options are available for domestic students. International students and students funded directly by the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI (in the form of an assistantship or fellowship) must complete the program in two years.

A personalized path to success

Bioinformatics faculty at the School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI know that excellent candidates for our graduate degrees might have a wealth of experience in technology or biology … but perhaps not both. Our faculty works with you to create a course of study that brings those skills into balance and positions you for a successful career.

Our graduates have been hired at companies such as:

Eli Lilly and Company
Dow AgroSciences LLC
Mayo Clinic
Indiana University Health
The Jackson Laboratory
Harvard Medical School
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
Vanderbilt University Medical Center
Funding opportunities
The School of Informatics and Computing offers graduate assistantships to most full-time, qualified students pursuing a master’s degree ($8,700 for non-resident and $4,350 for resident students). In accepting the school’s offer for financial support, graduate assistants become employees of Indiana University and commit to 5-10 hours of work per week under the direction of a designated faculty member.

In addition, most students have the opportunity for scholarships ($6000 non-resident and $2,000 resident) and hourly research assistantships.
