Description

What is Bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that overlaps with both the biological sciences and the physical and mathematical sciences; our educational program emphasizes the integration of computer science with genetics and molecular biology. It also provides a foundation in mathematics and statistics and skills such as computer programming, database design, and operating systems management. Students attracted to this program have dual interests in computer science and biology and find it an excellent choice for their broad interests. Students who complete this program often enter top graduate programs in bioinformatics and computational biology, enter leading professional schools (including law school, medical school, or dental school), or find employment in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or software development companies.

What can I do with bioinformatics?

The Bioinformatics Major is designed to help students develop a broad range of skills. The breadth of skills acquired provides students with exciting options for graduate school, professional school, and industry employment. The charts below show (a) the vast variety of occupations that our Alumni have obtained with their degrees and (b) the variety of graduate and professional degrees obtained. Graduate degrees vary from Business, Law, Medicine (general medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine) Computer Science and the Sciences (Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Biology and Genetics). The Bioinformatics major prepares you to have an incredible number of options.
